This paper aims to specify the contributions made by the application of a pragmatic perspective regarding the previous results of traditional stylistics. Its most outstanding contributions are the following: the study of the restrictions that style imposes on the so-called free variation of language and, secondly, the strengthening of the pragmatic dimension of style. Pragmastilystics is part of a linguistics of use that addresses contextual factors. The passage of pragmaticdiscursive strategies and inferences to linguistic structures and the mechanisms of grammaticalization processes are also analyzed. These theoretical considerations are later applied to the study of concessiveness (concessive clauses) in Spanish and Catalan, specifically with respect to two phraseological units that are currently semi-grammaticalized as concessive connectives: the Catalan expression només que the Spanish one a sabiendas de (que).
