La imagen del cuerpo como imaginario plasmado por pacientes con obesidad mórbida

    Este estudio tiene como propósito analizar el significado que mujeres con obesidad mórbida le dan a su propio cuerpo, a través de la valoración de dibujos de sí mismas, donde ellas expresan su sentir acerca de su padecimiento, así como también su dificultad para el manejo y liberación de sentimientos de desesperanza asociados al acto de comer. Este trabajo es parte de los resultados de una investigación cualitativa con un diseño interpretativo aplicado a un grupo de ayuda mutua conformado por 8 mujeres que presentan obesidad mórbida, es decir, un Índice de Masa Corporal mayor a 40, de edades entre 25 y 55 años, todas con un estrato socioeconómico similar, todas también residentes del municipio de San Nicolás de los Garza, México. La colecta de datos fue realizada en el periodo comprendido entre octubre y diciembre del año 2015, y se realizó utilizando la técnica de grupos focales, solicitando que las mismas participantes se dibujaran con la siguiente consigna: Esta soy yo el día de hoy. La interpretación de los dibujos se realizó tomando como base los tres registros que, de acuerdo con Zukerfeld, componen la imagen corporal. Sobre esto, encontramos que en el registro Forma existe una distorsión en cuanto al tamaño corporal, insatisfacción y preocupación con su apariencia física; el registro Contenido denota gran dificultad para percibir y discriminar sus sensaciones interoceptivas y sus sentimientos; el registro Significado muestra una sobre preocupación de su apariencia física, percibiéndose menos atractivas, carentes de voluntad y denotando una insatisfacción con la imagen corporal. Siguiendo el planteamiento de Castoriadis acerca de los imaginarios sociales, se hace hincapié en la manera como estos inciden en la imagen corporal de las personas con obesidad mórbida, y de las problemáticas surgidas a partir de la posesión de un cuerpo valorado negativamente por la sociedad.

    This collaboration aimed to analyze the meaning given by a group of morbidly obese women to their own bodies. This was done by evaluating draws done by themselves, in which they expressed their feelings about their disease, as well as their difficulty to manage and express their feelings of helplessness associated with the act of eating. This work is part uses the results from a wider qualitative study with an interpretive design applied to a mutual-help group formed by 8 morbidly obese women, that is, women with a Body Mass Index above 40, of ages ranging from 25 to 55 years, all of them from similar socioeconomic background, and all of them living in the city of San Nicolás de los Garza, México. Data was collected on the period from october to december, 2015, using the focal group technique and asking the participants to draw themselves with the instruction: This is me today. The drawings were interpreted from the three registers that, according to Zukerfeld, form a person’s body image. We found that in the Form register there is a distortion in the participant’s perception of their own body size, dissatisfaction and worry about their physical appearance; the Content register showed great difficulty to perceive and distinguish their interoceptive sensations and feelings; the Meaning register shows great concern about physical appearance, as these individuals perceive themselves as less attractive, lacking willpower, and being dissatisfied with their own body image. Also, following Castoriadis’ theory of social imaginary, we explore the way in which these concepts act upon the body image of the morbidly obese individual, and the problems arisen from having a body that is considered negative by society.
