Durante la guerra civil española batalla propagandística fue ganada por el bando republicano. La actividad en el bando nacional fue menos intensa y efectiva. Sin embargo, el equipo formado por Dionisio Ridruejo en torno a la Delegación Nacional de Prensa y Propaganda a principios de 1938 puso en pie un eficaz ensayo de propaganda totalitaria (cuyo precedente inmediato habían sido los órganos de propaganda de Falange). Dentro de este aparato, el Departamento Nacional de Cinematografía jugó un papel destacado con la producción de un noticiario y varios documentales, donde la contrapropaganda y la apropiación de materiales del enemigo dejan patente lo sistemático y calculado de su proyecto.

During the Spanish Civil War the fight for propagantistic dominance was won by the Loyalists while the Nationalists proved to be less intense and effective. However, the team formed by Dionisio Ridruejo for the National Delegation of Press and Propaganda at the beginning of 1938 started up an effective plan of totalitarian propaganda (whose immediate predecessor had been the Falange department of propaganda). As part of that plan the National Office of Film played an important role in the production of newsreels and other documentaries. The counter-propaganda and the images captured from the enemies made it clear that they had a systematic and well-calculated plan.
